The Brief 

Design a movie poster for The Light Princess, a whimsical adaptation of the 19th-century fairytale by George MacDonald. The story follows a young princess cursed with weightlessness—both physically and emotionally—who floats through life until she discovers gravity through love and empathy.

The poster focuses on the film’s opening scene: a magical moment in a vibrant forest where animals are mysteriously drawn to the princess’s light-hearted energy.

Objective

Create a captivating poster that visually introduces the fantastical world of The Light Princess. The goal was to capture the warmth, charm, and wonder of a girl who glides through a glowing, enchanted forest, with animals curiously following her presence.

Research & Inspiration

I drew inspiration from:

George MacDonald’s original fairytale themes of magic, love, and weightlessness

Classic fairytale poster design from the 1950s

Forest and animal symbolism

Visual storytelling styles from Studio Ghibli, Disney, and storybook illustration

Natural lighting and soft color palettes to create a dreamy, welcoming feel

Process

Used pencil and paper to explore compositions.

Focused on movement and energy—animals in mid-step or mid-flight, all facing the floating princess.

The forest gently curves around her, giving a sense of harmony and focus.

Digital Layout & Illustration

Brought sketches into Procreate and refined the silhouettes.

The princess is illustrated mid-step, slightly floating, with glowing elements beneath her feet.

Animals include deer, foxes, rabbits, and owls, softly lit as they emerge from the trees.

Color & Atmosphere

Chose bright forest greens, glowing yellows, and soft pinks/purples for an enchanted mood.

Used lighting effects to create a magical aura around the princess.

Included sparkles and soft glows in the forest to suggest her magical presence.

Conclusion:

This poster design brings to life the charm and lightness of The Light Princess while giving a modern visual twist to a classic fairytale. The project helped me explore how to translate literary themes into a single visual moment, deepening my skills in composition, lighting, and narrative design.
